[TYPO3] RealURL paths for pages not in navigation

I've actually had this same problem (T3 3.81, latest RealURL). I ran 
into this mostly because I define pages deeper than are shown in my 
navigation tree, but link to them in the content of the top three page 
levels instead. But RealURL refuses to recognize them when generating or 
accepting paths. Any advice in this regard would be very much appreciated.
