[TYPO3] Big application with T3?

Hi everybody,

I'm currently developing a large webbased application (okay, I'm in
the design phase at the moment). It's not a "normal" website, but
a system, where several different types of registered users shall
work together in a sort of workflow.

The system will not only be installed once. I'm sure, that some
other customers will also install the system, either complete, or
only parts of it. Therefore it should by quite configurable, not
only the application itself, but also the layout, the possible
integration into their website and stuff like this.

My idea today was to use Typo3 as an application framework. It
offers great functionality in terms of layout and there are many
ready to use extensions which could be interesting (news,
discussion board, ...), too.

To achieve this, I would have to split up the application into a set
of extensions and different types content elements. But the design
should be modular in any case, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Do you think, it is a good idea to go in this direction? Are there
any drawbacks I will have to face?

Do you know of any other "real applications" based on Typo3?

What about things like Ajax? I'm quite sure we will have to use
such things to easily update parts of the content without
re-rendering the whole page.

I'm curious what you guys think.

Cheers,

    Heiner
