[TYPO3] unable to open Extension Manager

Which PHP version do you use?
I had the same problems here and the only way for fixing this, was an update of 
PHP. As far as I remember you'll need at least PHP 4.3.x

Please have a look in your syslog. In my case there was a segfault of the 
apache-php module when I called the EM.
