[TYPO3] Using a Poll for the first time

I am interested in add in a poll to the home page of my website.  I added
the poll extension and then opened the documentation.  I am looking for
verification that I have to modify a couple of php files to get the poll to
work.  I am running typo3 3.8.  Also if this is not necessary can someone
point me at a good tutorial for using Poll.
