[TYPO3] Strange behaviour of 3.8.1 test package on Mandriva 2006

Did you point to /test-3.8.1 or to /test-3.8.1/typo3/install ? If first 
is the case try last one. I don't know if it helps, but that's the only 
thing that comes to my mind.
