[TYPO3] Condition 'if has child pages'

Have you tried using the ifEmpty.cObject

I use it to replace one HMENU with another if the first is empty, ie no
subpages.

eg.
temp.navsubmenu.stdWrap.ifEmpty.cObject < temp.navsubmenualternate
