I agree with you and I know exactly where your coming from. ;-)

It is the one great/awful thing about the TSOB - you always know that the
lines get added right at the bottom! So easy to find but always getting 
longer.

I guess the only thing I can say is that when I have what you posted I
reformat it and remove the un-needed lines from the template once I get
each section (index search/tt_products/etc) working before moving onto
the next part. And then also remove the CSS to an external file.
