[TYPO3] switching templates with typeNum

I would like to be able to switch template layouts on many of the pages 
within my site. I'm using TypoScript to create the template and typeNum to 
switch the layout.  It works except how would I get the &type= appended to 
the links within the automatically created menu items?   Is there a better 
approach to switching layouts?  Sorry, I'm a newbe.
