If you install the extension you don't need to activate anything ...

only if you use the patch from the bugtracker ...

As we communicated this on the core list we came to the conclusion that it would
be the best to always generate truecolor images and don't apply a "reduceColors"
before output when jpgs are generated and png's are generated as normally but
when the new option truecolor get's activated in the install tool they get
generated as truecolor .png
