[TYPO3] using TypoScript and $this->cObj->IMAGE to create thumbnails...

i found the point where it stops working:
here:
$theImage = $GLOBALS['TSFE']->tmpl->getFileName($file);

the function getFileName gets the right filename but it doesnt give any 
output. thats the path in the variable $path: 
uploads/tx_imagegallery/2005-12-12_00003.jpg

the picture definitely exists in this path
can anyone tell me why its not getting processed?
