I had put the code in the wrong file as you pointed out.  I don’t think the documentation is too clear about that.  Come to think
about it.. There is not much that the documentation is clear about..... thank god for this mailing list!

Why have you added your site's configuration to the ext_localconf.php? You should add it to typo3conf/localconf.php  - this way
upgrades of the extension are safe and it (might) help to solve your problem (just a guess).
