[TYPO3] Select a color according to the active level 1 menu item

thanks a lot for your detailed and much appreciated help!

That is as true as can be!  :))

Sometimes I get so stuck with a basic misconception that a good kick in the 
pants is needed to get back onto the right track.

I understand all solutions that you proposed and will now compare the pros 
and cons and chose the most appropriate for my job.
