[TYPO3] How to execute local applications from Typo3

Hi

I have tried using that extension and by inserting URL 
file://programs/outlook express/msimm.exe nothing happens when I push 
the new link
The status bar says:

http://mydomain/typo3/alt_menu.php

Does it need further configuration?
