[TYPO3] Localization problem

Fellow TYPO3 users,

A Typo3 v.3.8.1 site has a language selecter and is configured for
multiple languages as suggested by the Frontend Localization Guide.
Registered users can set a preferred language in their profile (language
column in fe_users, values as used for sys_language_uid).

Request by client is to use this preferred language as default
sys_language_uid with the possibility to overrule this by the language
selector setting.

I tried to retrieve the value via TSFE:fe_user|user|language, I
succeeded to retrieve the value by using a PHP custom function, but now
I can't assign this value to config.sys_language_uid in the TypoScript
part that handles the language settings...

Any bright ideas?
