Maybe you could try to replicate your environment to test the new 
[FE][pageCacheToExternalFiles] setting that comes with 4.0rc2.

The setting was created to "remove" the cache from MySQL to help typo3.org.

I did some very informal tests while thinking the feature was created to 
help page generation time at
