[Typo3] turning off menu elements

How do I turn off (do not display/skip) menu items that DO NOT have subs?

I had a shot at:

   IFSUB = 0
   IFSUB.doNotLinkIt = 1
   IFSUB.doNotShowLink=1

But obviously that isn't working.
