[Typo3] Converting existing cms websites into Typo3

I have seen, that Typo3 can export its contents in a certain XML format -
and import from the same XML file again.

So my question really is: Which approach did you use? Did you export your
200 sites into this XML format, or did you just write them directly into the
Typo3 database?

If the latter: Is there any technical documentation on the database design?
(eg. E/R-diagrams or the like)

Well, for what its worth, I just moved about 200 small sites with about 1000
pages from some other CMS to typo3 this weekend, and I just wrote a small
php script to extract the data I needed from the old system, and transfer it
to typo3.
If you have written your own CMS I would expect you to be able to do the
same.
