[Typo3] indexed search charset problem (mysql 4.1, typo3 3.8)

Hi there, 

Since i upgraded to typo 3.8 i get strange characters in the output of indexed search. 
It only happens with mysql 4.1, not with 3.23. Though both use latin1 as the character set. 

For example the german word "für" comes out as f�e
What am i doing wrong? Where do i need to change the charset?
