Hah! It turns out the *tutorial was correct*.

After completing the FTB tutorial and understanding a little more about
it, I got to thinking that maybe I got the editing type wrong, so I went
back and changed the _Editing type_ for both the left and right columns
to *Content Element*, and Voila! It displayed the same way in my BE as
the tutorial showed. Now I was able to create a reference to another
element and paste it into each column. I looked closer at the tutorial
page, and, sure enough, It did say
_For each field we chose "Content Element" for Editing type_
right under one of the screen shots. Somehow, I just kept overlooking
that the first time through. I had originally set the Editing type to
_Text area for body text_.
