It's at least partly because you have to go out to find forum
messages. I'd never have seen this message of yours on a forum...

Why not? You can always use a search engine to search for something on
a website:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Atypo3.org+%2B+%22mailing+list+archive%22

...and if you had done so, you'd have found that you can already
search the list archives...

Plus, in order to subscribe to (and complain to) this list, you HAD TO
visit a page [1] with a link to a
different means of accessing the archived lists (the text says "To see
the collection of prior postings to the list, visit the Typo3-english
Archives"):

New users might also find it useful to read the list rules [2] before
kvetching about the inadequacies of the system; the posting guidelines
say "Read before you post - read the available documentation, and
search the mail archives before posting" -- and the text is linked
directly to the archive.
