[Typo3] Extending filebrowser?

Hello everybody,

I have a question regarding the filebrowser used in the typo3 backend.

I want to create an extension to handle the media on a site, mostly 
with the use of metadata and categories. (Yes, that sounds familiar. 
The DAM extension does that very thing, it is however still too beta to 
use).

I think I can handle building the extension itself, however my main 
concern is how I can extend the filebrowser (yes, like DAM) to support 
my functionality?

I'm not trying to bypass DAM and it's development, it's just that I 
can't afford to wait for DAM to do what I want it to.

Hope you guys can point me in the right direction!
