[Typo3] Replace single whitespace character with other character in TS

How can I use parseFunc.short to replace a whitespace character with a dash? I am trying to do this to get the RealURL extension working with a select box I created... I've tried replacing  , %20, without luck. Seems that there is no way to show whitespace in TS because it strips it all.

Example:
        before.parseFunc.short {
               (single whitespace character) = -
        }
