Jane,

Are you referring to the FE plugin menu/sitemap or a template based one?

If template based you can do something similar to:

temp.sidemenu = HMENU
temp.sidemenu.entryLevel = 1
temp.sidemenu.1 = TMENU
temp.sidemenu.1 {
  target = page
  NO.afterImg = media/bullets/dots2.gif |*||*| _
  NO.afterImgTagParams = hspace="4"
  NO.linkWrap = {$fontTag}
  NO.ATagBeforeWrap = 1
  ACT < .NO
  ACT = 1
  ACT.linkWrap = <b>{$fontTag}</b>
}
