[Typo3] Website Very Slow in IE but fast in Firefox

I don't think the issue relates to validation (see my other post)

BUT I do notice that a number of the validation errors relate to
incorrect SGML characters e.g.
Line 235, column 53764: non SGML character number 146

What does this mean - and how can it happen as these all relate to
items in the menu that are genereted by Typo3 from the Page Title?
