[Typo3] Show special HTML characters in the RTE

Hello,

I can't get the RTE to show special characters like → and #8596; 
(They are shown but only as their HTML value).

I suspect the answer lies somewhere in the RTE-transformations and have 
  have tried the following:

RTE.default.proc.HTMLparser_rte = 1
RTE.default.proc.HTMLparser_rte.htmlSpecialChars = 2

This however doesn't work, and I'm out of ideas.

So if anybody has managed to get the RTE to show special characters I 
would like to know how.
