hi michael, this is clonedyke speaking =:o)

i still don't get the point in your newly created wiki page, but don't you
yourself feel commited to your own statement "please stick to the facts when
writing any comments!" ?

as you already have noticed, i wrote (only) some remarks to your statements.
some of them were deleted shortly after, but hey, that's the wiki way...

and some of your statements are still inaccurate or misleading simply wrong:

"[symlinks] not an integrated solution (but directory junctions are) and
requires an NTFS file system"

of course they do need a modern file system, but you were talking about
server (like) environments and nobody would run a server on FAT...

"[indexed search] Maybe a link would be good." a link where to?
i could supply you with the setup infos i personally use on one of my
servers.

"Logfile sizes
There is not tool like logrotate which compresses/deletes logfiles after a
given time.
Clonedyke writes: Apache/IIS are providing logrotate tools."

as i already wrote: you can use the apache provided logrotate tool or (if
serving from IIS) you use the integrated logrotation, so the statement in
its whole is wrong.

"With Windows NTFS you must defragment your partitions regularily or they
will become slow"

it is true that ntfs tends for fragmentation. but this is true with almost
any file systems. but ntfs fragmentation does not effect file system
performance the way you suggest (see
http://www.digit-life.com/articles/ntfs/index3.html).

"Under Windows you can use only NTFS or FAT32 from your local computer. If
you want to use the filesystem of another computer under Windows you need
always to use the full name containing the server name to access the file
system."

wrong. do a "net use X:\ \\10.0.0.1\myshare" and voila: you have a net
mounted X: drive ...

"Software installation
On Linux you can install new software with graphical tools or the command
line tools 'rpm' and 'apt-get'. You only need to restart some services
afterwards. The software can be freely downloaded and updated from a lot of
Internet mirrors.
On Windows you often have to restart your computer after the installation of
new software. To install new Windows software you must in most cases insert
a CD in your CD drive and type in licence numbers. This will get difficult,
if the server is not located at your office."

this statement i love the most =:o) because it simply ignores all available
microsoft remote mangement features, may they be builtin or 3rd party...

don't get me wrong: i love linux and use it myself. but it is utterly
pointless to discuss OS pro's and con's in here. in this NG it is all about
running TYPO3 on windows and i just wanted to state that you can do so if
you like - sometimes you don't have a free choice for the server system of
your personal liking. and isn't it better to run TYPO3 on a windows server
and support people doing so than running TYPO3 not at all (since SharePoint
would be the implied MS way)???

greets,

rainer
