[Typo3] setting up front end users and restricted sections

Hi board,
I have given some clients an empty site on the server which they are
currently filling with content. However, as the site is strictly speaking
live already, I don't want anyone to access it until it is finished.

I've set up a front end user group, I've got a login page and I've
restricted the root of the site to the set user group only BUT when I try to
view the site I get an error saying that page is not accessible but there is
no way to login.  

Can I set the site up so that users automatically come to the login page
when they put in the url?
