[Typo3] Hiding sub-navigation

Hi,

I have a template that uses a top bar for level one navigation, and a
side navigation tree for anything below. Basically I want to hide the
side navigation tree if there are no pages. I'm not sure how to test for
this... Is it something to do with levels??

I've been looking through the docs, newsgroups, etc, etc, and a few
people have raised this question - but I haven't seen any answers!!

Can anyone help?
