[Typo3] database not accepting changes in CWT Comm. user profile edit view

Hi list

I would like that a logged in user can change his/her username after login. For this purpose I installed the CWT community extension withh CWT feedit. It seems all goes well and no errors appear, the change is even confirmed. But a re-login with the new name would fail, the db is not updated with the new value. Tried also to change other fields, no change. I am on TYPO3 3.8 and using MySQL 4.1.10a. I am also experimenting with ext. sr_feuser_register, but it seems that the username cannot be changed there. Any inputs to this question are highly welcome. Thanks.
