[Typo3] no thumbnails otherwise IM seems fine

I cant view any thumbnails in my Back End. they show up like a white square 
with a red cross on it...

I can resize an click enlarge images on the front end so nor problem there 
appearantly...

Do you have any idea what's wrong (maybe some settings to verify)?

If no good clues maybe someone can point me in the direction as to install 
GM static version om my web hotel (linux based)
