[Typo3] Indexing PDF Files

I cannot get indexing to happen on PDF files I store in TYPO3 v. 3.7.0. The
site is hosted by a hosting service and I have got them to add the pdftotext
program into /usr/bin/pdftotext as suggested in an article I found.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to check that they have done that as they
said they had. I have also included page.config.index_externals = 1 in the
setup of the Template I am using.

I get normal pages indexed and are searchable OK but not any external files.
Is there something I am missing? Can anyone help please?
