[Typo3] Link Rendering

I am interested in rendering different links in different ways. For example, 
if someone adds a link to an external site, it would render a small 
globe/arrow to indicate the link was off-site. In addition, it would open 
that link in a new browser window.

Other examples might be word docs, pdfs, etc that would have an icon to 
indicate the file type and perhaps if you click on the icon, it would bring 
up some info on how to view that content. Music content might have a small 
icon that would open up the song in a music player (ie fe_mp3player).

I looked through tsref and ter but didn't see anything that would work. As I 
am using css_styled_content, I *thought* a hook might be in there for 
generating links, but once again, didn't see anything.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!
