Sounds like a big project. You asked for ideas.

One of the huge problems of hierachial data storage is that many solutions fit
into many more categories depending on the context of the problem that needs
solving. This can never be sufficiently anticipated at design stages.

One way to help cater for this is being able to access related content or
allowing content in more than one area. Be careful not to duplicate the
content but simply allow it to be pulled up in multiple categories.

i) Allow users who stumble across a useful article to suggest or include it
into a new category and hence increase the threads of relevance between
articles.

ii) Allow users to add keyword phrases to the article specifically for the
search facility to use hence increase relevance.

iii)Consider the search engine producing 2 sets of results, one set based on
natural indexing and the second set based purely on the meta data, this being
data the author has included and the defined keyword phrases etc.

iv)Allow additional scope on meta data attached to each article allowing
future possibility to store based on additional criteria and of course
retrieval.

v)Include an 'other people also viewed' feature so searchers can see what
other articles people who saw this article also used as a reference.

vi)Rather like Google alerts or Job websites, include a feature that will
email you of updates automatically for new content based on user defined
criteria.

Hope this helps.
Matthew
