[Typo3] Add fields to sr_feuser_register

Hi list

I need to add two fields to my front end user registration. I am currently using the sr_feuser_register extension.  The manual gives a very brief introduction to how this can be done. I do not know how to get the job done, however. 

The first field I wish to add is a textarea.  This should be fairly simple.

The next field is a selector box with 100 predefied options. 
1) Where should I write all these options? In the template file?
2) How/where do I add custom validation for this field? (E.g. to check if a value is chosen - I like to leave the first option blank)
3) How do I ensure the option stored in the DB is chosen when a user wish to edit his data? (selected="selected" should be added to the right option)
