[Typo3] Help creating a new plugin

Hey everyone,

I am trying to create a new plugin, and am having some difficulty.  I 
have followed the direction in "Creating a basic Extension" but I guess 
I really just wanted a "Hello World" example.  Does anyone know if such 
a beast exists?  I'm specifically trying to use the following in my main 
site template.

rightcoldata < plugin.helloworld_pi1

The plugin I made either never gets run, or the output never makes it 
into the page.  Any ideas?
