[Typo3] tt_news category list

Hi list
I would like to do the following type of overview of all news articles present on my homepage:

category1
article_cat1_1
article_cat1_2

category2
article_cat2_1
article_cat2_2

etc;

possibly with the pagebrowser showing the first letters of  the respective categories. has somebody done something similar yet? and if yes, how? i have been playing around a bit with listGroupBy, but was not very successful yet.
