[Typo3] RTE - rtehtmlarea striping SPAN tags

After reading an old post I found the answer:

Page TSConfig
-------------
RTE.config.tt_content.bodytext.proc.allowedClasses = highlight,
deprecated
RTE.default.contentCSS = fileadmin/templates/css/edit.css
RTE.default.classesCharacter = highlight, deprecated

***** The first line is used to override the default set by
css_styled_content, otherwise you can set the class in the RTE, but it
will get filtered again. ****


The *KEY* to preserving character styles (span tags) when you save is
the first line of the TSConfig above.
