[Typo3] local development, database replication

Hi List

As I wrote earlier my ADSL isn't optimal and anyway even with an optimal
connection it can be slow to work on the remote server. Also it is needed to
have a connection to work on the remote site instead of doing it with a beer
on the terras.

I have been experimenting now with the offline development and the
replication of database and files between remote and local.

If there is interest I will describe it further in detail but in short here
the workflow and tools: NOTE: do not experiment without having a copy of the
database first!!!!!!)

Step 1:
Buy SQLyog Enterprise (for windows) for US 79,--. I am not aware of software
with the same possibilities in Open License. The Enterprise version allows
connection to the database even without SSH and offers the
replication/synchronization) Have a look at their website. It seems that the
Linux version (free download) has this possibilities in the free version.

Step 2:
Make a replica of the remote database on the remote server. This can be done
with SQLyog. Write down the DB-name, User and PW. This is the backup if any
problems occur.

Step 3
Make an empty database on the local server and use the install tool of typo3
to connect to that empty database. With SQLyog the tables of the remote
database can now be copied on the empty local database. Now you have a local
replica.

Step 4
Copy the following folders from remote >> local: fileadmin and uploads.
This gives all the media (pics, files etc)

Step 5
Copy the typo3conf folder from remote to local. Take care: first put your
localconf.php file in a safe place. Then you exchange the localconf.php
(which comes from the remote installation) for the one you just saved in a
safe place (which contains data of the local installation).
(You could also decide not to coy the database.sql file. Doesn't matter but
is saves download time.

Everything should work now on the local installation.

In order to update the remote server you go the other way around.

NOTE: I can do this because the remote is in development and no data are
written in the remote database other than what I do myself.
I do not know yet what would happen if on both databases changes are made at
the "same" time. I will check this. SQLyog can synchronise databases.
Perhaps someone has experience with that.

Hi Albert,

I would include the fileadmin directory as well.

Cheers,

Bart
