Have a look at the _.htaccess file from the 3.7.0 dummysite:

$ cat /var/www/mysite/.htaccess
[...]
# You can also use this configuration in your httpd.conf, but you'll have
# to modify some lines, see the comments (search for 'httpd.conf')
[...]

I think this should help.
