sorry but that isn't right...you should not use mysql 4.1.x!

you may be OK installing typo3 3.8.1 (or may not), but you will have 
problems upgrading later as the mysql dumps are made using 
mysql<4.1...as the quote you posted says, mysql>=4.1 does not read the 
table format from these earlier dumps.

i had this problem recently and went back to mysql 3.23.x to solve it!
