[Typo3] forceCharset = utf-8 and existing content

Hi
I have a situation where i need to convert a web site to utf-8, however 
there is existing content in the database. I have enabled:
$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['BE']['forceCharset'] = "utf-8"
In other existing sites, only to see that existing content becomes 
corrupted (characters with umlaut, for example).

Is there a way that i can convert the database to be utf-8 encoded? So 
that the existing content can be used?
