[Typo3] Extending page editing/saving functions in BE

Hi Everybody,

How can I add some extra processing to editing/creation of new records 
(including pages) in the BE ? For example, I could want to log the event or 
send a mail whenever any tt_news item is created/edited or any page is 
created/edited. Is the information available in any document ?
