[Typo3] Storing fileadmin etc on a separate server

Hello All,

I have been asked by our system admins to look into whether external files,
such as images, PDFs, Word docs etc can be stored on a separate server to
the web server?

We are based on a Windows platform.

I have the feeling this would not be possible, having used extensions like
the DAM, danp_documentdirs, as well as Image Magick, file uploading,
templates etc., where I can imagine problems with pointing to a separate
server, but I would like to confirm this one way or the other.
