[Typo3] Strange external links in rtehemlarea

Hi,

a client of mine is using rtehtmlarea 0.4.72 and they ran into the  
following snag: their site has some area that are not managed by  
Typo3. Whenever they try to link to those by creating an 'external  
url' in rtehtmlarea, the links will not work and when reloading them  
in the editor they have a yellow background and a red outline. After  
disabling the RTE editor, it turns out that the the 'http:// 
<domainname>' has been stripped off the link.

External links to other domains work fine.

Is this some kind of protection that forces users to use internal  
links on their own domain? If so, does anyone know how I can bypass it?
