[Typo3] set alternate port or socket for database

I don't think that I can use the main php.ini because there are other 
php 'web apps' using a db server on the default port. If I can overrride 
that somewhere for the typo3 site that would be good. I was unaware of 
being able to use .htaccess.

I'll look into both of those options; see what I turn up,
