[Typo3] dontConvBRtoParagraph=1 but <br> are converted

Hi list,

On my Typo3 3.8.0, rtehtmlarea 0.5.7, css_styled_content 0.2.2 I use :

RTE.default.proc.dontConvBRtoParagraph = 1

<br> tag in HTMLArea is save in DB as <br />
<br /> from DB is rendered in FE with  <p class="bodytext"><br /></p>
<br /> from DB is loaded/replaced in RTE with <p></p>

What kind of configuration is needed to keep <br> tags everywhere ? 
(RTE.default.proc.dontConvBRtoParagraph did work in older versions didn't it 
?)
