[Typo3] menu number of subitems

I have created a site: http://sculptuur.djluc.nl (dutch) The problem: I want to modify the menu at the top. The menu is generated with Typoscript. With TS I can do things like IFSUB when the submenu is filled with pages. 

The problem: I want to know how many items there are in the submenu. Why? I want to create a background-image which fits nice. Currently I have to use an image as long as the items with the most sub-items. I could think about generating the image with GifBuilder or something. I already do that with the buttons.
