I never really got typo3 until I made my first couple extensions. Once I 
saw how the different parts fit together (extensions, typoscript setup, 
typoscript constants, backend modules, etc), I found I could pick up the 
rest of it pretty quickly. If you know php, you might look at that 
document on how to create a basic extension (also outdated, perhaps, but 
probably still useful). The videos help, too.
