[Typo3] FE user weirdness

Hi,

I am having a strange behaviour of FE users on a Typo3 3.6.2 web site.

I have a page with a login form, with subpages viewable only by users 
of a certain group. FE users and groups are defined properly.

I set up the styles.content.loginform.pid constant to point to the 
sysFolder where the users are stored. As a way of testing what was 
happening, I also entered some dummy text into the 
styles.content.loginform.goodMess constant.

Now when I try to log in, the message pops up as expected, but no user 
is registered. I am not redirected to the expected page. I activated 
the admPanel to check and there is indeed no fe_user.uid recorded. 
Further weirdness is that the URL changes from the login page to the 
expected redirection page, but the contant displayed is that of the 
login page.

Any clues as to what is happening?
