[TYPO3-dev] translations in a second table?

TYPO3 has a mechanism for having translations in another table than the 
original:
original = 'pages'
translations = 'pages_language_overlay'

can I use the same mechanism for my own table(s)?


will this work in the backend?
and will it work automagically with extbase?
or pi_base with $GLOBALS['TSFE']->sys_page->getRecordOverlay()?
